Musing About Manners

Musing Mondays2Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about  reading around people.
When is it inappropriate to read in front of others? Is it ever appropriate?

When you're in a social situation, I think your book should stay tucked away. Pulling out a book at a restaurant, for instance, is as rude as pulling out a phone to check emails, to text, or to tweet. If you're dining alone, then it's okay. I also think it's rude to pull out a book during a presentation or sermon. It's just plain rude to the person speaking.

On long car trips, after you've exhausted every imaginable topic, pulling out a book isn't rude. I think you should catch up first with the real people beside you before you catch up with the fictional ones in the story. Laugh and enjoy the trip; the book can wait.

Hey.
I think it's rude to read a book while someone is talking to you. It's a kind of funny because I never can read when momy is around ... she loves to talk. I just can read when she's sleeping. lol

Great points. We don't allow our kids to take books or DS games into restaurants. They need to learn how to converse.
