Meet Michelle Stimpson, Author of Trouble In My Way

Tell us about your current book release.

Trouble In My Way is my first young adult novel about a 16-year-old girl who wants to do the right thing - but sometimes trouble gets in the way. Especially when your mother accidentally reads your diary!

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

When I'm in schools working with teachers, I get a chance to hear what's going on in kids' lives. I've learned that they're still struggling with the things we all struggled through during the teen years - relationships, parents, identity, school.

Who are your main character(s)?

My main character is Karis Reed and I just love her! She's naive in a wise kind of way.

Did you have a favorite character(s)? Who and why?

Karis is my favorite. She's just flat out funny!

Did you have to do quite a bit of research for this novel?

No. Watching kids was about all the research I did. I also went back and pulled some things from my old diaries. Whew! I was a mess!

What do you hope readers will learn/discover from reading this book ?

I hope that they'll re-think integrity and what it means to make the transition from child to young adult with integrity.

Okay, a not-so-fun question. How important are reviews to you as a writer?

I like good reviews, of course, but when I get an unfavorable review, I have to kind of brush it off. I think about all the books that other people liked that I don't like and I realize it's all a matter of taste.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Karis Reed doesn’t try to get in trouble—but, sometimes, trouble gets in the way. An unauthorized trip to a male friend’s house puts Karis at odds with her mother, a minister who is determined to make sure that Karis doesn’t follow in her footsteps by getting pregnant at sixteen. Against Karis’s better judgment, she takes part in a plan to keep her social life flowing just beneath her mother’s radar.

Enter a self-proclaimed bad boy, a trifling potential stepmother, a deployed soldier, and threats to relationships with two of Karis’s best friends. When Karis’s mother finds out about the deception, she is fed up and decides that Karis may be better off living with her father. Feelings that Karis could never before articulate come to surface when she realizes that there’s nothing left to lose when you’ve lost your parents’ trust. Through a renewed faith in God’s plan for her life, Karis decides to recommit herself to living with integrity.

Ladies, It's good. How many times do you read a book made it on my list? Rare. This one is a keeper. Well, that doesn't help because I keep all my books, but you know what I mean!

Jenny, Boaz Brown was really good.
