Preacher's kid and prodigal Harriet Bisset returned to her church and her family in Franklin Tennessee, seven years ago. Once the proud owner of two tattoos and a nose ring, Harri is now addicted to Jelly Bellys in lieu of hangovers and Bible verses in lieu of foul language. The good news is that she has everything under control: a part-time position as director of women's ministry, a church family that adores her, a rent-free home in a senior mobile home park, and the possibility of owning the cafe where she waitresses. Nothing could tempt Harri to return to her old ways. Nothing but a 1298cc, liquid-cooled, sixteen-valve, in-line four-cylinder motorcycle-and the church consultant riding it.
Reformed rebel Maddox McCray's arrival at First Grace spells C-H-A-N-G-E for the dying church. And it just might mean change for Harri when Maddox sets out to convince her that even Christians are allowed to have fun.
The story of a prodigal daughter's transformation, Splitting Harriet reminds readers of God's delight in forgiving, loving, and enjoying the ride. (Multnomah, 2007)
Splitting Harriet takes an essential look at our need for a Saviour, our need to forgive ourselves, and our need to love people despite how they look or dress.
I simply loved this story and did not want to see it end.
AND those Jelly Bellys Harriet kept munching making me want a few!I combed the area looking for Jelly Bellys! I found them at Walgreens and they are not cheap. A 7oz bag cost $3 and some change. No wonder Harriet rationed them. But oh, they are good. As if I didn’t already have enough expensive habits! Coffee, books, and now Jelly Bellys!
But I noticed something while Harriet chomped on, rationed out, and divided those yummy treats. Jelly Bellys are like church people. Some are sweet, some are sour, some are disguised as something they are not. Some you want to savor while others leave such a bad taste in your mouth, you need a tongue scraper. And as much as we may want to pick out the ones we don’t like and keep them away from the ones we do, they are meant to mingle together in harmony. Yeah, sounds like church folk to me.
Splitting Harriet is not to be missed. The trickiest part of picking up a Tamara Leigh novel is trying to put it down. Allow yourself enough time to read it before bedtime and unlike me, go get yourself a bag of Jelly Bellys before reading. You might just have a craving.
I am looking forward to Tamara Leigh's next book, Faking Grace due out August 2008!
